Are Dried Fruits Good For Dogs Everything you Need to know

by Asjad khan 12 Aug 2023

Dry fruits can be potentially harmful to dogs, and it's important to exercise caution when considering whether to feed them to your pet. While some dried fruits are safe in small quantities, others can be toxic and pose health risks to dogs. Here are some key points to consider:

Safe Dried Fruits for Dogs (in small quantities):

  1. Apples: Apples are safe for dogs in moderation, but be sure to remove the seeds and core, as they contain traces of cyanide.
  2. Bananas: Bananas are a good source of potassium and fiber for dogs. They can be given in small amounts as a treat.
  3. Blueberries: Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and can be given as a healthy treat for dogs.
  4. Cranberries: Unsweetened cranberries can be beneficial for urinary health and are safe in limited quantities.

Toxic Dried Fruits for Dogs:

  1. Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins are highly toxic to dogs and can lead to kidney failure. Even small amounts should be avoided.
  2. Currants: Similar to grapes and raisins, currants can also be toxic to dogs and should be avoided.
  3. Prunes and Plums: These fruits contain compounds that can cause digestive upset and should not be fed to dogs.
  4. Apricots: The pit and fruit flesh of apricots can pose a choking hazard, and the pits contain cyanide-like compounds.
  5. Cherries: Cherries contain cyanide, and their pits can be a choking hazard. Both fresh and dried cherries should be avoided.

Considerations:

  1. Portion Size: Even safe dried fruits should be given to dogs in small quantities as treats. Too much fruit can upset a dog's stomach due to its natural sugars and fiber content.
  2. Quality: If you decide to offer your dog dried fruits, ensure they are unsweetened, preservative-free, and free from added flavors.
  3. Allergies: Just like humans, dogs can have allergies to certain foods. Introduce any new treat in small amounts to monitor for any adverse reactions.
  4. Other Ingredients: Some dried fruits might be part of trail mixes or products that contain other ingredients that are harmful to dogs, such as chocolate or nuts. Always check the ingredient list before sharing.
  5. Consult a Veterinarian: It's best to consult your veterinarian before introducing any new foods, including dried fruits, into your dog's diet. They can provide guidance based on your dog's specific health needs.

In summary, while a few select dried fruits can be offered to dogs in moderation as treats, it's crucial to be aware of potential risks and toxicities associated with certain fruits. Always prioritize your dog's safety and well-being when considering any dietary choices.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
