A native of the Mediterranean region, the almond is a tree nut. Almond trees were once seen growing wild there and were eventually domesticated as early as 3000 BC. Almonds are mentioned as a treasured meal given as presents in the first book of the Bible, Genesis. It turns out that the almond's edible portion is a seed from a drupe, a fruit whose hull and outer shell are normally not consumed. The almond hulls and shells are frequently used as bedding and feed for animals after the almond seed has been removed.
